Voting Difficulties
Nov. 7th, 2006 02:31 pmAfter a long airportful day, the red eye from Honolulu to San Francsico, and public transportation adventures I am home. Hawaiian adventures will have to wait for another time but suffice it to say I can now mark nigali antelope off the list of God's Precious Little Creatures Phil Needs To Eat. The former make-up artist from Magnum P.I. cooks a fine chunk of beast in his new career as chef of the Kilauea Lodge.
Among the reasons for keeping my trip brief was the need to be back for election day. Unfortunately, on opening my mailbox, there was no Alameda County voter registration card. I was hoping to complete my collection, since I have registration cards for this election from every other county I've lived in (two, in the case of Santa Cruz).
You see, I seem to have a problem with the various registrars of voters. Try as I might, I cannot get myself removed from Santa Cruz County's rolls. I think its because they just really like taunting me with jury duty. No amount of returning "NOT A RESIDENT OF THIS COUNTY" forms seems to stop this.
When I got my personalized license plates in Pleasanton, I did the motor voter thing to change my registration to Alameda. Last month, having not received any Alameda voter materials, I wandered back down to DMV to check my registration status. According to DMV, I wasn't registered anywhere. They were kind enough to give me a fresh registration.
So, today, a bit jet lagged I consulted the County of Alameda website to find out where my polling place was. The website did not recognize my address and gave me its best guess. It was off by about four miles. When I found the correct location, they had a bit of a puzzler trying to figure why I was in one book but not the others.
Regardless, I had voting success without having to do provisional ballots. Perhaps now Alameda will throw down for a rumble with Santa Cruz over who gets the honor of dismissing me from jury duty annually.
