Most Paperwork Problems Solved
In addition to a lack of rum vendors on my arrival in Oregon, the fine folks at the home of Fightin' Beavers had no idea who Miguel and I were when we arrived. As feared, Housing f'd up and there were no rooms waiting for us at Sackett Hall like there should have been. Luckily, this happens often enough that OSU maintains "contingency rooms" to put people up in until problems can be straightened out. There are also few enough people here that there's plenty of rooms to go around.
Actually, there were precious few people anywhere in Corvallis on Sunday. It felt a bit like Hobbes' End from "In the Mouth of Madness" only with a more dismal mercantile character. Today, the population reappeared. It seems Corvallisites do not like to be in Corvallis on weekends; I can't blame them.
The creepy resumed when Miguel and I got our proper lodging in Sackett Hall at lunch. Sackett is a huge, sprawling brick monster that was OSU's former women's dorm when it was built in the 1950's. During the summer, no one wants to be in an non-air conditioned building so it is mostly empty. All the wood paneled walls and parquet floors with rec room equipment covered in sheets and no one but me wandering around in the whole wing gives the place a real "The Shining" Overlook Hotel feel.
Yes, I am avoiding to doing radiochemistry lab write-ups. Why do you ask?
