You have just made realize why so few of the dewars I see in labs actually have the mesh on there anymore. Either their experiments destroyed the mesh or they wanted their science to be HARDCORE!!!
I would think that pickling would be more a function of what you put in the stein rather than the linear increase with stein size. But, alas, you have The Angry Liver (TM).
Perhaps there is another Klingon out there that needs captured Federation drinking technology...
